Week 9 Resource post–We have to find ways to cross the digital divide

Today people cannot live without the Internet, a tool that helps us to gain information and communicate with others. If there is someone who cannot access to the Internet, he/she may lose most opportunities to connect with the world. The article that I am going to talk about mentioned that “the internet has become such an essential tool for access to information and fast communication that people in households without a broadband connection have become the 21st century’s equivalent of those who had to collect water from standpipes while their neighbors had a tap in their houses.”

Week 9 Reading

We are now live in the period that comes with the Internet as well as cyberspace. Cyberspace is a free wonderland which exists in the Internet. People can meet, communicate with, and share opinions with other users over there, also we can post whatever we want to the public space. At the same time, our thoughts and behaviors are influenced by the new technology. So what is the relationship between cyberspace as a public space and accessibility standards? I will discuss this question by viewing how it changes our education.

Online Politics

As far as I am concerned, the new technology and Internet influence and change the situation of political, especially the elections. Because today people can barely live without the digital technology and Internet, it is easy to get to the most people by traveling across the most popular channel. Therefore, candidates love to use it as a tool to make themselves be known to the voters and win the elections. Because I come from Taiwan, an island behind China, so I would like to take Taiwanese president as an example. For about couple of months ago, I accidentally found that Taiwanese president has his own fans page on the Facebook. He posts some encouragements for his people and makes comments on recent event. For me, I think this is a huge step of political, because in the past politicians always publish their opinions on television or newspaper, which are edited and not immediate information. However, I can know how the president thought and comment on what he posts right away just like what I do on my friends’ walls. This change makes me feel that I get closer to the president and have more chances to express my points of view.

Week 7 Reading—Online News

I agree with the arguments that both Gillmor and Online Journalism Review mentioned in their article. New technology, blogs and podcasts, are providing great media platforms for people to publish and establish their own opinions. At the same time, these new technology change how people gather media sources and information. Besides the traditional news offers by the press, we have more choices today for receiving news by having blogs and podcasts with us. However, it is because the blogs and podcasts can be received all over the world, the blogers should pay much more attention in their posts, or they will easily mislead the public.

Discussion Leader—reflection

To lead a discussion is a new experience for me. Since English is not my first language, so I was kind of nervous at the beginning.  However, the peers who were in my discussion group showed their willing and concentrated on what I shared. Therefore, I am really thankful for those people who attended my discussion group. They gave me encouragement which I need.

Week 5 Reading

We are now live in a period that information technology is blooming; people can gain material and information they need or want in a few second by some clicking. So I believe that to manage the information that we get is really important for us to learn today. Because with well management, we can garb what we need in the huge amount of information and make it become something easy for us to re-read and use. I really like what Warlick says in the article “The Art & Technique of Personal Learning Networks orA Gardener’s Approach to Learning.’” He argues that “we are working an information ecosystem, learning how its elements interrelate and arranging new relations to create an environment, a network, that produces what we need to know to do what we need to do.” I think he does a really good summary of how our situation is today, and what we are going to do is make good use of what we have and know what our next step is.  Therefore, I think personal learning network is important for people who have bunch of resources and information. Because with the met work, they can categorize some of their information, and effectively grab the useful one rather than waste time to find things they need among the countless resources.

Media Consumption Reflection

This assignment makes me have a chance to review my schedule of using technologies and media these days. I found that I really rely on the technologies and media that I use. I spend way more time than I thought I did. Without them, I cannot image how could I live without them.

Media Consumption Diary

6/29:

I sent and received 32 e-mails. Most of the e-mails that I have received were come from Facebook’s message reminder, and I sent e-mail for the purpose to discuss my class group project. I spent about 4 hours to send the e-mail, receive and read them.  I listened to music and play with my iPod whenever I was in my way to school in the bus. Overall, I have spent about 2 and half hours with my iPod. During the day, texting messages also cost me 3 hours reading and sending them. Also, I spend 3 hours to read news and articles online, most of them are regarding to Taiwan, my home town. Moreover, I spent two hours on Facebook including playing Tetris there. Also, I talked to my friends on the cellphone for one hour. I use WordPress blog to post my comments during class COM300 for 20 minutes.

Week Two Reading Reflection

(1) Two “ah-ha” moment from these readings
Today we have countless technologies for us to use which help our lives become more convenient and easier. All of the technologies have different purpose in our life, for example, we use telephone to contact people and television shows us great programs in our free time. However, the first “ah-ha” moment while I am reading is I find that a lot of the technologies are come from similar concept. For instance, many of technologies transmit information to us, such as the Internet, telephone, cell phone, video, television…and so on. It is obviously that they have different in our lives, but most of them are created because people eager to gain new information and connect to people around them. In the purpose of communication, they are created. Otherwise, the first “ah-ha” moment for me is that I realize that the distance between people and culture become closer because of the creation of technology. Since most of technologies shorter the time that used to cost, so we save lots of time to complete the same work when we have technology. For example, it used to cost a month or more time to delivery an international mail before, but now we only need some seconds to send an e-mail out to wherever place that have the Internet. Therefore, the technologies save out time and help us done more work in a shorter time.
